It was nice warm night on the Fox Studio lot this past Monday, as the studio hosted a special screening of Fox Searchlight’s upcoming film “Snow Flower and The Secret Fan” directed by Wayne Wang.
During the intimate red carpet screening, Wayne Wang was joined by lead actress Li Bing Bing wearing a lovely beige Kavali dress and matching Christian Loubatin shoes. While being interviewed by this reporter’s counter part Celeste Arevalo of Pacific Rim Video, Li Bing Bing jokingly mentioned that Wayne Wang was her lover because he was so open to opinions from the actors.

Helping to bring the film to the big screen was Wendi Murdoch and Florence Sloan who are real life friends. Both women loved Lisa See’s novel by the same name that the theme of love, friendship and sisterhood gave them the impetus to produce the film.
Based upon the 19th century China, two young girls are matched as laotongs or “old sames” and are bounded together for eternity – in a sense like sisters. However, the two characters Lily and Snow Flower are separated once they marry and must communicate secretly through the written language of nu shu. The mode of communication is made by silk fans with the nu shu messages written on them.
Jumping to modern day China, Nina and Sophia family and career force their own laotong into question.
It was no question that other guests who attended the special screening were touched by what they heard of what the film was based upon. Lynda Carter was excited about love and friendship that she kept her interviews short. Other celebrity guest in attendance included Rita Wilson, Sarah Rue, Jaclyn Smith, Melina Kanakaredes, Steven Van Zandt and Willow Bay along with the book’s author Lisa See.
The film opens in theaters July 15, 2011.
